Detailed Review of Semrush Tools (2025)
Semrush has got a plethora of tools. Let’s kick things off by exploring one of the most important features called domain analysis.
1. Domain Analysis
Domain analysis is the basic yet most powerful tool from an SEO point of view. It presents you with the quality of a domain along with all the important information you need to optimize your site for better online visibility.
You can make the most out of this feature by applying it either on your own website to see what changes you can make to boost the SEO of your website or on a competitor’s website to find out various ways to outrank them.
Performing domain analysis on Semrush is quite easy. All you need to do is head over to the domain overview tool under the competitive research toolkit, enter the URL, and you will get an instant idea of how that domain is doing in the Google search results.
To test this feature, I did a quick analysis on Backlinko.com — a renowned blog by Brian Dean around SEO Training and Link Building Strategies.

As you can see in the picture above, I was immediately presented with this site’s authority score, organic search traffic, paid search traffic, and backlinks.
Here, the Authority score will help you quickly understand the quality of this website.
With traffic stats, you can analyze the niche’s potential and competition.
But that’s not all. You’ll get to know the following metrics as well;
- Traffic (organic and paid) distribution by country
- Top organic keywords
- Organic position distribution on Google SERP
- Main organic competitors
- Competitive positioning map
- Backlink profile (Referring Page URL, Follow vs Nofollow, Backlink Type, Top anchors, and referring domains)
Watching top organic and paid keywords is a treat to the eyes as these are the keywords that generate the most traffic to this website. You can target the same keywords to drive more traffic to your website.

Digging into the backlinks will further help you to rank for the competitive keywords and improve the overall authority of your website.
So, this way you can analyze any domain in any niche to collect important data and optimize your website to take your online business to the next height.
2. Keyword Research
This is yet another important aspect of SEO that helps you with keyword research which is all about:
- Finding how many monthly searches are there for a particular keyword
- Knowing the keyword difficulty that specifies how much work needs to be done to rank for that keyword
- Exploring the sites that are already ranking in the top positions for that keyword
- Getting suggestions for more keywords
With Semrush you can find out all the above information in an easy way.
Keyword Overview Tool
This tool will help you access the basic keyword data in Semrush.
For doing so, simply enter a phrase in this tool and you’ll see:
- Average number of monthly searches and trend for that keyword on Google
- Keyword difficulty
- List of top websites ranking for that keyword
- Keyword suggestions (variations, questions, related)
- CPC and Competition
- PLA and Ad copies

Here, the keyword difficulty score is one of the most important metrics that indicate how hard it’s going to be to rank for a particular keyword.
The higher the keyword difficulty percentage, the harder it’s to rank for that keyword.
Keyword Magic Tool
This tool literally does the magic by showing keyword suggestions in detail.
As you can see, this tool generated a list of related keywords along with all important metrics such as search volume, keyword difficulty, CPC, etc.

Moreover, you can take advantage of filters to refine the results according to your needs.
All in all, Semrush’s keyword research tools provide you with everything you need to decide which keywords you should target as part of content marketing.
3. Rank Tracking
Rank tracking also known as position tracking is a way of monitoring how your website is doing in search engines for particular keywords.
Setting up position tracking for a website in Semrush is super easy. Simply go to the Position Tracking tool, enter the project domain, and name this project.
After that, add the keywords you want to track, and you will be displayed a detailed report showing how your website is ranking for those keywords.

Furthermore, you can also add your competitors’ websites to compare how your site is performing against them for chosen keywords.

Above all, you’ll be intimidated by your rank-tracking progress (for example your post loses position from the top 10 results for a keyword) via emails on a regular basis.
4. Backlink Analysis
Backlinks are the number of external links to a site and are one of the most important factors that denote how well a website performs in search results.
The largest backlink database, fastest data updates, accurate data, and trusted Authority Score are the things that make Semrush backlink analysis powerful.
In Semrush, there are two ways you can look at the backlinks of any website.
Let’s explore them one by one.
Backlink Analytics
This tool lets you get deep insights into any domain’s backlinks profile. Simply, enter the domain name and you will be shown that domain’s backlinks profile at a single click.

As you can see in the picture above, the total number of backlinks and referring domains for this site are 726K and 36.9K respectively.
By clicking on the backlink stats, you can further dig into the source and target URL of the backlinks.

In the same way, by visiting the referring domains, you can see the root domain name, the number of backlinks from that domain, its IP address, and much more.

But that’s not all. You will also come to know about;
- New & Lost Backlinks and Referring Domains
- Categories of Referring Domains and Top Anchors
- Authority Score of the referring domains to understand the overall strength of the backlink profile of the analyzed domain
- Backlink Types (text, image, etc.)
- Link Attributes (follow, nofollow, sponsored, etc.)
- Top Level Domain Distribution (.com, .org., .gov links, etc.)
- Top Countries
- Similar Profiles
- Top Pages

All the information is presented in a very simple manner and you can replicate the same to save time on your SEO efforts.
Here, I would also like to highlight that currently, Semrush has a massive database of 43 trillion which is again a plus point over its competitors Ahrefs (26 trillion), Majestic SEO (10 trillion), and Moz (41 trillion).
Hence, with Semrush you will get more comprehensive backlink data as compared to any other SEO tool.
Backlink Audits
This is another great tool that shows a toxic score of the referring domain and overall site health.
This metric measures the probable risk of a particular backlink using a 100-point scale from 0 (good) to 100 (very toxic).

By reviewing the audit results, you can make easily optimize your backlink profile by performing these actions;
- Get in touch with domain owners to remove any toxic links from the Remove tab. Semrush will automatically provide the domain owner’s contact info.
- Request Google to ignore your toxic backlinks by moving them to your Disavow tab, prepare a single file of all the toxic links and then upload it to the Google Disavow Tool.
- Whitelist good backlinks If you are sure that the link is not harmful at all
After that, you may see a boost in your search rankings as Google has an adverse effect on the sites with lots of poor-quality links pointing to them.
5. Link Building in Semrush
Link building is the process of making other sites link to your site. It is vital for your online business success because sites with more quality and relevant links rank better in search engines.
And Semrush’s link-building feature is one of the features that makes it one step ahead of other SEO tools.
It is a powerful tool (2,000 prospects for each domain, 10 outreach strategies predefined, 4 parameters for tracking outreach) that lets you build backlinks quickly in 3 easy steps.
1. Add keywords you want to rank for
2. Add competitors you want to outrank
3. Find the best backlink opportunities, connect with the concerned person, and track your backlink profile

Here, I added the “Semrush free trial” keyword along with two competitors, and this tool immediately gave me a list of websites that are worth approaching for a backlink so that I can beat the competing sites.
But that’s not all. This tool goes one step ahead and allows you to shortlist the sites you want a backlink from.
Simply, click on the “to the progress button” and you will be displayed all the necessary information to contact the site owner in a CRM style.

From here, you can choose an outreach strategy and send an email to the domain owner, and track further progress.
Isn’t it amazing?
6. Broken Link Building
This is another important SEO practice that is about finding the broken links of any domain and then asking the concerned person to replace those dead links with relevant content of your site.
This tactic will help you build new backlinks to your website and that will further boost your site rankings in search engines.
Unfortunately, to find broken links in Semrush, there’s no dedicated tool and you will have to use the backlink analytics tool itself.
Enter the domain name, switch to the indexed pages tab, tick mark the Broken Pages option, and you will get a list of pages with links that cannot be crawled (dead pages).

Next, you need to get into the specific links that point to these pages so that you can build a list of prospects. To do so, click the number in the ‘Backlinks’ column, and you will be shown a full list of the links pointing to this page.

Finally, outreach to website owners to convince them to replace their broken link with yours.
For doing so, either you can use your email account or you can take advantage of Semrush Link Building Tool to outreach within the platform.
7. Site Audit
Technical SEO is another important aspect that leads to better crawlability, overall good health, and improved rankings of your site.
So, it is extremely important to keep track of the technical SEO of your site as well along with on-page SEO and off-page SEO.
With Semrush, you can audit your site against over 130 technical and SEO mistakes to find and fix all the issues that might be affecting Google rankings of your site.
To perform a site audit in Semrush, simply enter your domain name, and within a few seconds, you will get complete details about your site’s health and top issues.

To make your job easier, all your site issues are categorized into three parts (based on their severity: errors, warnings, and notices) so that you can fix them on a priority basis.
As you can see, there are 4 critical errors that need to be rectified as soon as possible to give a better user experience.
To get more details about these errors, hit the errors or switch to the Issues tab.

Now you can clearly see that 2 pages have a slow speed issue and the other 2 pages have title tag errors.
To find out the pages that are facing these issues, click on these errors further.

Finally, you can see the pages with slow-speed errors. Fix them and follow the same steps to remove all the errors that are affecting your website in Google search results.
In addition to these SEO tools, at Semrush you get access to a number of other toolkits as well like Local SEO, Advertising, Social Media, Content Marketing, and Competitive Research.
Let’s quickly look at each in turn.
8. Semrush Content Marketing Platform
Creating content is a time-consuming process, and when it comes to creating SEO-optimized content then again it’s a challenge for most of us.
But Semrush comes with an amazing platform that lets you build excellent content easily and quickly.
The first tool that you would find very helpful is Topic Research.
It will assist you in finding a ton of content ideas in just a couple of clicks.
All you need to enter a seed keyword and within a few minutes you will be displayed with hundreds of subtopics and content ideas around those subtopics.
Here, I did topic research on Social Media Marketing and the results are in front of you.

Plenty of subtopics along with their volumes.
Once you click on the show more link, you will see each card has 10 content ideas, subtopic difficulty, efficiency, related searches, and questions.

Isn’t it great?
Once you finalize a topic, the next step is to create SEO-friendly content.
Here’s where the SEO Content Template tool comes in handy.
It will guide you in writing winning content by analyzing your top 10 rivals’ content.
Simply enter the target keywords and you’ll receive recommendations on how to create SEO-friendly content.

Besides Topic Research and SEO Content Template, you will also get access to a couple of other tools which are as follow;
SEO Writing Assistant — Check if your texts follow their best SEO recommendations within Google docs and WordPress.
Marketing Calendar — Plan editorial calendars, collaborate with your team, and ensure all the tasks will be implemented in time.
Brand Monitoring — Find the most relevant platforms for content distribution and track your and your competitors’ brand mentions online.
Post Tracking — Track referral traffic, social shares, backlinks, and estimated traffic for your and your competitors’ articles.
Content Audit — Identify your top articles, and which ones require an update, based on real-time metrics from Semrush, Google Analytics, and Search Console.

Semrush has got you covered with social media management tools as well that help you streamline all your social media activities to amplify your efforts.
This toolkit is included three tools;
Social Media Poster — Create and schedule posts on major platforms including Google My Business within seconds.
Social Media Tracker — Track the performance of your social media efforts.
Social Media Ads — Create, launch, manage and optimize Facebook and Instagram ads.
10. Advertising

If you’re involved in PPC projects along with SEO projects then Semrush is certainly an amazing bargain as compared to some of its competitors.
It’s all because Semrush has more PPC data (detailed CPC competition and distribution data, live ads) and PPC marketing tools.
Paid marketing tools by Semrush help you analyze competitors, carry out keyword research, and create compelling ad copy.
Keyword Magic Tool — Get access to the largest keyword database to build the best keyword list for your PPC campaign.
Advertising Research — Analyze your competitors’ ad strategies.
Display Advertising — Explore your competitors’ GDN (Google Display Network) strategies (ad texts and banners).
PLA (Product Listing Ads) Advertising — Analyze the performance of other Google Shopping advertisers.
On the contrary, other tools give you basic CPC figures for individual keywords.
11. Semrush Trends
This is quite a new feature by Semrush for analyzing competitors’ websites available at an extra cost of $200 per month.
This toolkit primarily includes two tools;
1. Traffic analytics: This tool gives you a full view of any company’s online performance including;

12. Local SEO (Listing Management)

Semrush also helps you create a perfect local SEO strategy. But again if you want to access this SEO feature, you’ll also bear some extra amount.
Either you can opt for ‘Basic Location,’ which is priced at $20 per month or ‘Premium Location’, which will cost you $40 per month.
Both packages have the ability to:
- Distribute business information
- Suppress duplicates
- Track local rankings
- Manage GMB and Facebook listings
- Monitor reviews and user suggestions
But the premium version comes with two extra features:
Local heatmap — This feature helps you analyze how easily your customers can find your business among other local companies on Google Maps.
Response to review — It will help you build trust with your customers, reinforce your brand’s reputation, and can even turn negative reviews into positive ones.
13. Agency Growth Kit
Last but not least — Agency Growth Kit.
It facilitates you to automate the most important workflows of your agency to boost revenue growth including;
- Set up a new leads channel via the Agency Partners platform
- Organize all client data in Client Manager, and
- Automate time-consuming tasks with My Reports and Client Portal
That being said, this add-on costs $100 per month.
Here we are done with reviewing the most important features of Semrush. For me, it’s a solid tool and reveals all the key data you need to make your SEO projects successful.
And all because of these features, Semrush excels at the list of the ahrefs alternatives as well.
Now let’s get into the Semrush pricing and plans.
